Everyone is a number in this dystopian near-future where cameras track your every move. Score above 90 and your set for life. Score below 75 and you’re on your own, kid.
Even recently-elected leftist Presidential candidate, Daniel Ortega, supported the total ban in an apparent attempt to curry favor with the Catholic Church. Silver lining though. Women convicted of having abortions will only be sent to jail for six years. The current president, Enrique Bolanos, wanted thirty. In the U.S. on November 5, 2003, President Bush signed into law the Partial Birth Abortion Act which banned all late term abortions with no exception to preserve the health of the mother. Here is a listing of who voted for this ban (mostly Republicans with some Democrats) and who voted against (mostly Democrats with a few Republicans). In politics, women are chess pieces. 7 Responses to “Madre de Dios”Leave a Reply |
What upsets me is that it’s most often men making these laws. If women started making laws that prohibited men from masturbating because “every sperm is sacred,” we would hear no end.
This is absolutely disgusting.
It’s not politics, Lauren. It’s organized religion that treats women as wombs with legs. Without the father church, such bans on abortion wouldn’t be even close to politically viable.
I agree with Avi. Even the representative from my district here in Ohio, who is Democratic and often liberal in the way he votes on many issues, voted for the ban on partial birth abortions. He’s Roman Catholic. There’s no way I would believe him if he tried to tell me his religious beliefs didn’t influence his vote on banning partial abortions, even if the mother’s health is at risk. I wouldn’t be as irritated by this vote if there had been an exemption for mothers who are at risk by having the child. That’s just irresponsibility on the part of these politicians who voted for this. Irresponsible and disgusting. Pro-life indeed. Whose life?
Perhaps Roman Catholics ought to petition their representatives to speak out on behalf of Catholic women whose lives are threatened by this.
You’re right, Avi. Women are pawns in religion too.
On the bright side, Gay Marriage is now legal in Israel.
What’s more, it appears that Gay couples have more rights there than in the US.
You win some, you lose some.
Thanks, Frank. As I’ve written before, good news is hard to blog about. Thanks for sending some this way.

It’s politics, too. Hey, Lauren, since it’s been in the news, I was wondering what you thought of all the recent moves by secular Turkey and members of the European Union to ban the wearing of Muslim headscarves in public?
