Everyone is a number in this dystopian near-future where cameras track your every move. Score above 90 and your set for life. Score below 75 and you’re on your own, kid.
A) I usually haven’t seen anything nominated As a result I have precious little to say about the winners and losers of last night’s celebrity back-patting festival. I have, in fact, only one opinion on the whole shebang: No nomination for Battlestar Galactica? Exqueese me? I’m near the end of Season 2, which I’ve been watching on DVD, and holy robots, what an amazing show it is. I admit the first season only occasionally rose above decent (I’d give it a B overall) but now that the writers have settled in a bit, it’s like a punch in the gut every episode (in a good way, I mean). The characters are believable and complex with intriguingly twisted relationships. The long arc concerning what the Cylons are really after has even me stumped and I consider myself practically an expert on the nefarious motives of humanity’s future AI offspring. And nearly every episode riffs on a political theme currently rippling through the world we actually live in. But then I don’t think Buffy ever won a shiny trophy and you don’t want to get me started on Buffy. I guess it probably comes down to old-fashioned genre prejudice, a subject I’ve already addressed in this blog and don’t feel like whining about again. But if you’re not already hooked, do yourselves a favor and put it on your Netflix list. 19 Responses to “Golden Globes Shmolden Shmobes”Leave a Reply |
Praise for the 12 Gods! You finally jumped on the bandwagon galatica …. The end of season 2 is great! Then don’t miss the webisodes on scifi.com
PS – I have the first ten episodes of Season Three on the DVR but if you want to come over and watch ‘em, you got to wear the same hat you had for my wedding.
So wait. I get to watch BSG, see you and Asami, AND wear my funny hat? Deal.
well, 2.5 out of 3 Asami handles BSG with as much attention as I give to holistic nail care – Jimmy the bartender will be taking her spot on the couch, but I’m sure he won’t mind the hat
i’m actually rewatching the first season right now and i don’t know what you’re talking about with the “b” grade. the series premiere, the episode called “33″ is one of the best tv shows i’ve ever seen.
it’s kinda starting to suck this season tho’. sorry to have to tell you.
I think I know why the season 3 is starting to suck (slightly). The angst in each episode is discovering how humanity manages to struggle on facing imminent annihilation.
SPOILER WARNING (SORT OF)
Season 3 drags because that threat has been partially lifted.
I’m so hooked on BSG season 2, I’m sure I’ll watch all of Season 3 anyway. You know what else is way cool? The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I just watched parts of the “Chuckles Bites the Dust” episode on YouTube. If you’re ever in a bad mood, just fire up this link:

Wow, you’re smoking crack as usual, Lauren. The mini-series and season one were teh awesome. Season 2 went so massively off the rails—the Cylons aren’t myseterious it’s just that the writers have no idea what they want either–into bad bad bad TV land that I have given up on the show for all time. Gah!
Will you and I ever agree on anything?
I mean I love watching those award ceremonies with a room full of bitchy friends. The fun is in the mocking of the rich beautiful people’s bad clothes and self-obsessed speeches. What larks!
Agreeing on things is boring, Justine. That’s why I blog. It took me all of Season 1 to start liking Apollo. I didn’t like him at all at first. He was too pretty and too whiny. Now I’m way into the dude. One of the things I like about TV over movies is the amount of time writers can devote to character development and relationships. And the Starbuck/Apollo thing is fun to watch, better than the Gaius/Number6 thing, I think.
I’ll leave the awards ceremonies to you until Cher comes back and wears something worth mocking. These days everyone tries to be all classy and boring. I can’t mock that.
Hey Lauren–It look me six months to get up the nerve to watch Season 3–I was so shell-shocked at the end of Season 2. But it was worth it–more ups and downs and boyo, some punches to the gut. I think Season 3 is stronger than Season 2, but then I also watched the first thirteen eps of Season 3 in one long row, so the impact was such that it shellshocked my critical facilities and I could only hang on for the ride. How the eps would look standing hourly alone, I’m not sure. But still–even when this show fails, it still tries, and I love it for that alone. (Altho’ I just can’t stand Apollo–grow some spine, will ya?). I also love Ron Moore’s podcasts–check ‘em out if you haven’t already.
You do realize that the Golden Globes, Academy Awards and such “glamorous” (ha!!) rituals do not exist to please us, the consumers of the movies and TV shows…
…but to exalt and fetishize the “beautiful people” who give each other awards, and thus help networks, studios and sponsors sell products to us.
To paraphrase Marshall McLuhan: The purpose of the Golden Globes is to sell consumers to sponsors — and, to a lesser extent, maintain a quasi-religious and lucrative “star worship”.
The correct response to the Golden Globes is a sneering Bronx cheer:
