banned books week

I’m on a crushing deadline, so I have very little time to blog right this minute, but I wanted to call people’s attention to the fact that this is Banned Books Week. The American Library Association and many others will be honoring that most American of freedoms (the freedom to think for yourself) by supporting books and authors who have been banned.

Among the top ten most banned books of 2007:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (#5)
The Golden Compass (#4)
The Color Purple (#6)

Interesting factoid. Sarah Palin, used her power as Mayor of Wasilla to fire a librarian who refused to ban books. The public fought back and had the librarian reinstated. Take that, Palin, you would-be book banner.

I love it! Another negative on Palin. The woman will send this country back 50 years with mentality like that!

Hopefully, she’ll humiliate herself sufficiently in tonight’s debate to send a wake up call to her any one who was considering voting for that ticket.

According to a Wasilla reporter, there were three specific books she wanted banned. I’d love to know what they were.

Apparently, Palin didn’t mention any specific books. She only asked the librarian how she would act if Palin did decide to ban “objectionable” books. No books ultimately got banned, it seems, because the librarian took a stand and had the people of Wasilla behind her. Go librarians!

I love libraries, have done since childhood. Places of refuge and exploration, secret societies for the love of reading. Better than a security blanket for me. I had a crush on a librarian with long tresses and an intense air when I was 16 and spent many afternoons among the stacks, lovestruck and book-crazy. I devoured it all indiscriminately, from Kierkegaard to Kerouac, Donne to Dick … From books I gained my subversive education.

Good for you. A subversive education is the best kind.
