I dug around my email folder and found my original response to your question about what inspired Cycler and whether or not it was difficult switching back and forth between Jill’s and Jack’s POV. Here it is:

I’m never quite sure what inspires my stories. My
mind is full of them and eventually one just gets so
big I have to do something with it. But I know that
once Cycler got started I stayed with it because I
wanted to explore the limits of gender and of
identity in general.

It was quite easy switching back and forth between
Jack and Jill. To create any character at all, you
have to put yourself in his or shoes and really see
the world from that point of view. In the first
draft,
I also had sections written from the mother’s point
of view. But I took those out because I wanted a more
intimate and confrontational perspective.
